Generally speaking, take-out food is seen as a bit of a parenting misstep … but we all do it, don’t we? Every now and then when we’re so tired that the thought of turning the oven on to ‘whip up’ a home-cooked meal is enough to send us screaming into the distance. The good news is that not all take-out is bad and there are tons of healthy grab-and-go options around Joburg to choose from.
Replace the traditional burger and milkshake with a wholesome wrap and smoothie (with almond milk if your kid is lactose intolerant) combo at Kauai. Nandos Strips, Corn & Salad kiddies meal comes with three grilled chicken strips, two corn-cob wheels, a salad and 500ml water. Nü Health Food Café at the Waterfall Lifestyle Centre serves up fresh food like the Nourish Bowl or the Protein Balance Plate using local produce. They also have low fat plain frozen yogurt which will be a nice alternative for those little ice cream cones the kids are always asking for.
