The morning of October 29 marked an exciting one for the Best of Joburg team and Joburg’s number one radio station, 947 … as voted for by Joburgers.
In celebration of 947’s feats, the station hosted the Best of Joburg team at its Primedia headquarters to share their excitement in snitching wins in this year’s competition.
For 20 years, Joburgers have voted 947 as best radio station, and this year the 947 Breakfast Club scooped the best radio show. Radio personality Anele Mdoda took home the best local radio personality award. Three cheers for them!
Caxton Local Media Joburg North branch runs the Best of Joburg competition and, speaking at the celebration at Primedia, the branch’s business manager, Norman Dawe, said, “We’re excited to be here with you, the awesome 947 team. From Joburg, we say thank you to you guys for all you do, keeping Joburg happy and on their toes, as Anele does, and that’s what it’s about. Joburg loves you, so well done to you guys for the three achievements this year.”
Sporting larger-than-life Best of Joburg certificates, a 947 cake and of course some bubbly, the celebration was seriously festive. The 947 Breakfast Club team, station manager Thando Makhunga and other 947 members were all present. Makhunga said, “We’re very honoured and humbled and especially thankful. I think sometimes we focus on revenue, audience figures, this that and the next but when you get accolades like this and recognition from our actual listeners which is purely independent it’s a great feeling.”
She mentioned this has become part of the Primedia culture. “If you are able to win 20 years regardless of who is here, it shows that our focus is our listeners. It’s about what we giving back to the city,” she said.
The queen of radio, Mdoda, was ecstatic about her two-year consecutive win. “I think it’s wonderful because, I mean, you’ve seen billboards, you know ‘Anele, queen of radio in Joburg’ and you know if you love 947, 947 loves you, so it would be a bit awkward if we didn’t win this because, you know, which Joburg loves you if Best of Joburg didn’t love you?” she said.
She emphasised it is really important to maintain the brand and keep the legacy of past hosts. “To stay at the top is very important. I mean Jeremy did this for us. Darren did this for us. And now I took over from them. It’s important to keep their legacy in tact and expand on it and I think that I and the team as a whole have done just that,” she said with pride.
One of her favourite restaurants in Joburg north is Marble in Rosebank … which was also a winner for best spoil yourself restaurant.
