Where to dine with the pooches in Joburg

As a Joburg resident, you have access to some of the country’s most delicious cuisine and unique dining experiences. If you are a dog owner, though, you may have a difficult time finding a chic restaurant that also has a pooch-friendly outdoor dining space. Luckily, restaurants across the city are opening up their terraces and sidewalks, and we’ve gathered a list of fashionable spots that encourage the accompaniment of your best four-legged friend.

Arbour Café & Courtyard

Walking into a Parisian culinary precinct has never been easier than when it’s done in Illovo. Tucked away in an array of greenery sits Arbour Cafe & Courtyard, a quaintly magical eatery that’s more than ready to welcome you and your fluffy companion.

This French-inspired cafe and crêperie is often populated by breakfast and coffee enthusiasts. The team prides itself on delicious and wholesome food made from fresh ingredients. The gluten-free buckwheat galettes (savoury French pancakes) attract those looking for the healthy alternative. Open seven days a week, Arbour Cafe is conveniently located right next to a hair salon, jewellery and gift shops, a gallery, and even an art shop that’ll be the perfect haven for the kiddies while you order another galette.

Voodoo Lily Cafe

At this friendly, caring eatery, the food is organic and sustainable, and breakfasts are particularly good. The airy and beautiful space is welcoming to dogs, even offering them their own menu with organic chicken-breast slices, organic chicken livers and puppy biscuits.

St Andrew St & Wrenrose Ave, Birdhaven, Johannesburg, 2196

Salvation Café

Salvation Café, situated in the bustling 44 Stanley Avenue complex, is all about fresh, simple, and delicious food. The menu is inspired by the owner and chef’s travels and their salads are like none you’ve ever tasted before while the breakfast menu is extensive.

44 Stanley Ave, Milpark, Johannesburg, 2092

Nice on 4th

Nice on 4th in Parkhurst is the perfect spot to sip on freshly squeezed orange juice while getting lost in a book, with your pooch lying at your feet. Nice on 4th has an adjacent bookstore specializing in everything from bestsellers to unusual titles. Make sure to try their signature breakfast, the egg basket, consisting of toast baskets filled with poached eggs, bacon, and topped with spicy tomato relish.

River Café

River Café is the ideal city escape as it’s surrounded by nature and rolling lawns. The café’s large menu has everything from light lunches and salads to burgers and pizza on offer, and guests can choose to enjoy meals outside (with their pooches) or in the beautifully decorated restaurant.
