1. Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme, voted best doughnut shop, has been keeping doughnut lovers happy since the first store opened in North Carolina in the USA in July 1937. And since it opened in Rosebank a year or so ago… we have, we admit, been happy!
Krispy Kreme is an international retailer of premium-quality sweet treats, including its signature original glazed doughnut. They offer signature doughnuts that vary between their international franchises. SA is lucky to have a decadent gourmet range and limited edition flavours that change constantly like the milk tart flavour and peppermint crisp flavour. 4. XO patisserie
People from all over Joburg are crazy for hand-made doughnuts from this relatively small place with a big reputation. XO Patisserie in Melville, Johannesburg, is one of the few bakeries in South Africa where you can find a local version of the cronut, the popular croissant or doughnut hybrid. When you eat a cronut you get the best of both – croissant-type pastry fried in oil, rolled in sugar, filled with cream and topped with glaze. XO also serves the ultimate freakshakes.

However, Joburgers will be pleased to hear that Chef Alex Windebank and his wife Eloise are still producing some of the city’s unrivaled doughnuts, only this time – it’s at their new fine-dining restaurant in Illovo.
